Why Students Struggle with Math
When students are struggling with math, it can be difficult to know how to help. Many students continue to struggle despite tiered intervention, 504s, or IEPs; additional tutors or 1-on-1 time with teachers; or other therapies or programs designed to address math learning challenges.
When students are struggling to learn math, I’ve found that it is rarely because they are not capable, but rather that the challenges that are preventing them from learning have not been fully identified or addressed.
By taking a step back and looking at the roots of students’ math learning difficulties and designing interventions and supports that address students’ core learning needs, we can create meaningful math learning experiences for students that help them to not only access grade level math instruction, but to become confident, competent, and successful math learners.
A Psychoeducational Approach to Supporting Struggling Math Students
Hi, I’m Adena.
I’m a licensed educational psychologist who specializes in math learning challenges and disabilities including dyscalculia, ADHD, and anxiety. I have a dual background in school psychology and math education that has given me a unique perspective into understanding and supporting students who struggle with math.
I believe that all students can learn math, and that when their underlying learning needs are identified, understood, and supported, struggling math students can become confident, successful math learners.
My mission is to provide positive and meaningful math learning experiences and help as many students as I can through direct support for students and by teaching, coaching, and providing resources for the parents and educators who support them.
